Governor Gavin Newsom has officially dropped the hammer on hemp-based THC in California, and we at Ripkitty are thoroughly disgusted. In a recent move, Newsom proposed emergency regulations aimed at banning any detectable THC or other intoxicating cannabinoids in hemp products, effectively gutting an industry that has provided natural, accessible alternatives to countless Californians.
According to Newsom and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), these measures are being taken to “protect youth from the adverse health effects of dangerous hemp products.” The new regulations would also require anyone purchasing hemp products to be 21 or older, limit hemp products to five servings per package, and place a chokehold on industrial hemp food, beverages, and dietary products intended for human consumption.
Let’s get real here, though: This isn’t about the kids. It’s about fattening the wallets of Big Cannabis at the expense of smaller hemp companies, consumers, and ultimately, freedom of choice. The irony here is thicker than smoke in a grow room. California has prided itself on being a progressive leader when it comes to cannabis reform, yet this ban reeks of corporate greed. By limiting hemp-based products that contain THC, the state is effectively forcing consumers to turn toward highly regulated, heavily taxed cannabis, most of which is controlled by a few big players in the industry.
Hemp-based THC offers an affordable, accessible, and natural alternative for adults seeking the medicinal benefits of cannabinoids. Banning it won’t stop people from seeking out the relief they need—it will just push them to more expensive, corporate-controlled options. This move feels like an all-out attack on the diversity and accessibility of cannabis-derived products in the state, and that’s why it’s so repugnant.
At Ripkitty, we’ve always been dedicated to offering quality, affordable hemp products that provide real value to our customers without the overwhelming costs and taxes that come with traditional cannabis. The move by Newsom and the CDPH is a direct threat to that, and we won’t sit idly by as they attempt to force us into a corporate-controlled market.
We stand with the small businesses, the consumers, and the activists who have fought tooth and nail for accessible cannabis options. We see this for what it is: an underhanded attempt to eliminate the competition and pad the pockets of Big Cannabis under the guise of “protecting youth.” Let’s not pretend this is anything else. It’s just another case of the government telling us what we can and cannot put into our bodies, all while ensuring that those with deep pockets control every piece of the pie.
We at Ripkitty are keeping a close eye on how this situation unfolds. California’s cannabis crisis is far from over, and this is just the latest chapter in a much larger story. We will continue to fight for consumer access, small business rights, and most importantly, the ability for people to choose natural, affordable alternatives like hemp-based THC.
Stay tuned, California—we’re not going anywhere. And neither is the fight for fair cannabis and hemp regulation.
